How Long Does CBD Oil Stay in Your System?

Wondering how long CBD or THC will stay in your system? If your oil has any THC content, you might also be interested in how long the THC will remain detectable.

CBD products are divided into three main categories: CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD, and full-spectrum CBD. Isolate products contain only CBD, while broad-spectrum products contain other cannabinoids and terpenes. Full-spectrum products contain all the compounds found in the cannabis plant.

CBD is available in a variety of forms, including CBD oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, and topical creams.

But how long does CBD stay in your body?

The answer is not as simple as you might think. It depends on a number of factors, including how much CBD you took, how you took it, the strength of the CBD, and your metabolism.

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

Generally speaking, CBD will stay in your body for around three to five days.

How Long Does CBD Last?

CBD has a half life of around two to five days. This means that after you take CBD, it will take around two to five days for CBD to wear off.

However, many factors can influence how long CBD stays in your system. These factors include:

How often you take CBD

The frequency of use is also a significant factor when it comes to how long CBD stays inside you. People who use CBD on a daily basis will likely have it in their system for a longer period of time than those who only use it occasionally.

This is because frequent CBD use may cause a buildup of both phytocannabinoids and endocannabinoids within your system, and since CBD can prevent your body from breaking endocannabinoids down. This can cause CBD to stay in your body for much longer.

How much CBD you take

The amount of CBD you take will have a direct impact on how long it stays inside your system. If you take a small dose of CBD, it will likely leave your system relatively quickly. But if you took a large dose of CBD, it could take longer to leave your system. This is because your body will need to process and metabolize the CBD before it can be eliminated.

Taking more CBD than your body needs can also cause the cannabinoid to linger in your system for longer.

Megadoses of 100 milligrams or more may stay in your system for several times longer than ‘normal’ doses. On the other hand, these large doses also provide long-lasting health benefits.

In a nutshell, the more CBD you take, the longer it’ll stay active within your body.

What Type of CBD You take

The type of CBD product you use will affect how long it stays in your system.

When you take CBD, it enters your bloodstream and begins to interact with your endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis—or balance—in the body.

This means regulating things like pain perception, mood, appetite, and memory.

CBD tinctures, oils, vapes, capsules, edibles, and topicals all have slightly different availability rates and absorption times.

In general, products that get absorbed quickly - like vapes(which can be harmful) and tinctures - will also leave your system more quickly.

This is because smoking and sublingual ingestion allows CBD to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

CBD oils also bypass the digestive system as they are absorbed directly through the buccal mucosa - the lining of your mouth, while eating it causes it to be metabolized by the liver first. So you may be able to take a lower dose and still get the same benefits.

CBD edibles are the opposite. They’re absorbed slowly and time-released by your liver over more extended periods of time.

Topicals are one exception: they kick in fast, yet don’t get systemically absorbed (via the bloodstream) at all.

How You Take CBD

CBD Oil

If you take CBD alongside anything else. For instance, taking CBD with a healthy fat source like MCT oil may allow it to kick in faster - and leave your system quicker as well.

Taking CBD with other metabolic-boosting substances, like coffee, may also slightly speed its excretion, but more research is needed on this topic.

Your Metabolism

Your metabolism also plays a crucial role in how long CBD stays in your system. Metabolism is the process by which the body breaks down and eliminates substances.

If you have a fast metabolism, you may find that CBD leaves your system relatively quickly. But if you have a slow metabolism, it may take longer for the CBD to be eliminated from your body. This is because it takes longer for your body to process and metabolize the compound.

Your Body Composition

Your body fat percentage also affects how long CBD stays in your system. This is because CBD is stored in fat cells, so people with a higher body fat percentage will typically have CBD stay in their system for a longer period of time than those with a lower body fat percentage.

Individual Variation

There are also several individual variables that can affect how long CBD stays in your system. These include age, weight, gender, and overall health.

When it comes to CBD oil, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how long it stays in your system. This is because numerous factors can affect the rate at which CBD is metabolized, including your age, weight, and overall health.

CBD oil is metabolized by your liver and excreted through your urine. The time it takes for CBD oil to be completely eliminated from your system depends on several factors, as we discussed, including how much you take and how fast your metabolism is.

In general, however, most people can expect CBD oil to remain in their system for an average of three to five days, which is the half life of CBD. Of course, your specific experience may vary. That’s why most experts believe that it's best to use CBD oil for a week or two to see how it works for you.

Why quality matters

If you want to get technical, low-quality CBD oil can remain in your system for much longer than the high-quality stuff.

That’s because low-quality CBD products may contain additives and contaminants, like heavy metals, that remain in your system for a long, long time. These additives may actually hurt your body’s endocannabinoid system more than the CBD itself helps.

CBD oil that’s too high in THC (some poor-quality oils are) can also stick around in your system for longer than you want — long enough to cause you to fail a drug test.

That means if your favorite website promises "Passing Our Labels" or 'No THC', but doesn't list concentrations on their site, don’t take them at face value - check out what kind of lab reports they provide first before deciding whether this is right for you.

How long does pure CBD oil stay in your system?

For just the right amount of time.

Pure CBD oils may be processed faster than low-quality ones, since they don’t have any harmful additives to slow them down.

Researchers don’t yet know exactly what combination of factors determines how long CBD stays in your system, but it’s likely that your endocannabinoid system utilizes what’s needed, allows any excess CBD to go through circulation again, then discards the rest.

Pure, full spectrum CBD probably stays in your system for however long it needs to.

Though researchers can't say for certain how long CBD stays in the system. Users generally claim that Pure Full Spectrum CBD works best when used regularly.

What about CBD tinctures?

Wait a minute, you might be thinking. I thought tinctures and oils were the same thing?

Well, not technically...

CBD tinctures differ from CBD oils in that they have an alcohol/ethanol base. Back in the day (think many decades or even centuries ago) the only way people knew how to capture plant essences was by using ethanol. To this day, a true CBD tincture will have ethanol as its base. <8>

The modern extraction method used to make them is quite efficient. First, the CBD is decarboxylated, which is the process of heating a substance in order to remove a carbon dioxide molecule, it helps to activate the compound's therapeutic properties.

Decarboxylation typically takes place at temperatures between 120 and 190 degrees Celsius.

Next, the CBD is extracted using supercritical CO2, which is a highly pure form of carbon dioxide. This extraction method ensures that all of the beneficial compounds in the plant are preserved. Finally, the CBD extract is suspended in a carrier oil, such as MCT oil or hemp seed oil. The end result is a potent tincture which is easily absorbed when taken sublingually.

How long does CBD tincture stay in your system?

More research is needed on this topic — but CBD tinctures likely stay in your body for between one and four days. During its time in circulation, your tincture’s CBD content may kick in more powerfully than you’d experience with a capsule or an edible.

How can you reduce the amount of time CBD stays in your system?

There are a few things you can do to reduce the amount of time CBD takes to get eliminated from your system.

First, drink plenty of water, hydration helps your body metabolize CBD and eliminates it from the system more quickly through urine.

Second, exercise regularly; this will help speed up the metabolism and eliminate CBD from your body through sweat. Working out regularly will also increase your water intake, making the elimination process much faster.

Finally, eat a healthy diet with a lot of fiber and avoid processed foods. This will help to support your liver and kidneys, which are responsible for filtering toxins out of your body.

What you need to know about drug/urine tests

How long does CBD oil or tincture reside in your system? Not long enough to hurt your results on a drug test. CBD may be detectable in urine for days or even weeks, but most drug tests don’t look for CBD — they look for THC.

“Conventional urine drug testing for cannabis targets a common metabolite of THC, called Carboxyl-THC,” cannabinoid experts explain. <9>

Grace Kroner, a lead researcher at the University of Utah, confirmed this concept when he conducted a study using traditional ‘point-of-care’ drug tests. His study found that CBD “did not react with either of two commercially available tests used to screen for marijuana use,” while also noting that CBN and other trace cannabinoids might cause a false positive test result in rare cases. <10>

Does CBD show up on drug tests?

No. CBD is not tested for on standard point of care drug tests.

Can CBD make you fail a drug test?

The short answer is yes — it can.

If you are concerned about passing your next drug test, it would be best to use THC Free CBD products, often called CBD Isolates so that there isn't any THC present on the urine sample which will show up during analysis.

Summing things up

CBD doesn’t remain in your system for all that long.

Not that it needs to. Just a single dose of CBD can lead to long-term metabolic and psychological shifts, far after the CBD itself has ‘worn off’ and left your system. Personal experiences and scientific research both make it clear that CBD is quickly and easily processed by your body.

The benefits of CBD are most noticeable with consistent, daily use. It's rare for someone who uses it only once or twice in their lifetime to notice major changes right away, but this is simply because those individuals didn't use the supplement regularly.
