Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid Strains

Cannabis indica and cannabis sativa are two types, or strains, of the cannabis plants.

Cannabis plants have over 100 compounds, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is intoxicating and causes the "high” state and cannabidiol (CBD), which does not.

Whereas hybrid is a mix of indica and sativa strains. They combine the effects of sativa and indica in different ratios to bring out the desired effects.

Unlike Indica and Sativa, hybrid strains are not constrained to a certain type of effect. They are, however, constrained to their genetic composition.

A hybrid with a high percentage of indica genetics will likely lean towards relaxation, even if it has some sativa traits.

Does this, however, make them more powerful? Well, it's not that simple!

Are Hybrid Strains Stronger?

Well we cannot say that hybrids are stronger than indica and sativa strains because hybrids are made by combining them both.

The “strength” of the hybrid strains, just like others, depends on the ratio of the THC to CBD and other factors.

Even when crossbreeding indica and sativa strains, they often retain some of their genetic characteristics, their chemical composition, and effects.

What Potency Actually Is

A beautiful lake view

It’s true that Indica strains are associated more with relaxation and Sativas more with energy and mental stimulation. Hybrid strains combine these effects.

Traditionally, these effects were seen as the result of varying cannabinoid ratios, mainly CBD, THC, CBN and CBG.

But…traditional definitions of different strains of cannabis confine them to very specific effects predominantly on their THC to CBD ratio.

It might have been true for classic non-engineered strains, modern breeding practices have produced indicas with high THC and sativas with high CBD content. Hence, cannabinoid content varies widely within each category.

Which leads to significant variations of effects within each strain family as some of them can have mixed effects.

THC is a major factor, but not the only one in determining a strain’s effects. CBD, CBN, CBG, other minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds work together to enhance each other’s effects.

Terpenes are a major contributor in differentiating cannabis effects. Common terpenes include:

  • Myrcene: Often found in Indica strains, associated with relaxing and sleep promoting effects.
  • Limonene: Provides citrusy aroma, may enhance mood.
  • Pinene: Offers pine scent, potentially improves alertness.
  • Linalool: Floral aroma, may reduce anxiety.
  • Caryophyllene: Spicy scent, potentially anti-inflammatory.

This interaction is known as the entourage effect.

Cannabis has over 113 identified cannabinoids, each with their unique effects and benefits. But did you know that the same plant has over 500 compounds in total including terpenes, flavonoids and others which contribute to its effects.

The differences which arise in effects and potencies can be influenced by their specific terpene profiles and other compounds, not just THC or CBD content.

For instance, Indica strains generally have higher concentrations of mycrene, a terpene known for its relaxing and sedative properties. Sativas on the other hand, often have higher levels of terpenes like limonene (uplifting) and pinene (focus-enhancing).

What's Indica and Sativa?

Indica and sativa strains are basically two types of cannabis plants. They were originally classified based on the plant's physical traits. they've become known for producing distinct effects.

Indica Strains

Indica has broad, dark green leaves that grow on shorty, bushy plants.

They are known for a calming, sedative experience, often associated with relaxation and a full-body high.

They also generally tend to have a higher CBD content, which may contribute to their calming effects.

Sativa Strain

Sativa has light green and skinny leaves that grow on a tall, slim plant.

A lot of sativa strains are all about giving you a mental boost and keeping you energized.

It’s often called the "daytime" strain because it won’t leave you feeling tired or sluggish—instead, it helps you feel more alert and ready to take on the day.

It’s known for lifting your mood and giving you that mental clarity you need.

Effects Of Indica

Indica strains are generally reported to be more physically relaxing. This is the strain famous for the “couch lock” effect.

A lot of people prefer them for sleeping because it is more sedating than Sativa strains.

Commonly reported effects include:

  • Full-body relaxation
  • Increased appetite (munchies)
  • Reduced acute pain
  • Evening/nighttime use
  • Promotes sleep

Effects of sativa

Sativa usually has a more mind-alerting effect since it contains more THC than CBD.

People usually get euphoria and stimulation from this. It might lessen anxiousness as well.

These strains are generally known for:

  • An uplifting, energetic feeling
  • Enhanced creativity and focus
  • A more social, chatty vibe
  • Great for daytime use

What Are Hybrid Strains?

Hybrid strains are a mix of both indica and sativa varieties, creating unique profiles that can offer a balanced experience.

The effects change according to the strain’s ratio and breeding. Some might give you a mellow body relaxation like an indica while keeping your mind clear and focused like a sativa.

The beauty of hybrids is that they offer flexibility, giving you a tailored experience.

Genetic composition of hybrids

Hybrid strains are still largely affected by their genetic composition of indica and sativa ratio. As we talked about earlier, cannabinoids are not sole determinants of the effects.

Indica dominant hybrids are more likely to provide relaxation because they inherit their genetic makeup and effects. Just like sativa dominant hybrid strains are more likely to give you a “head high” than a bodily high even if they have high THC content.

Hybrids can be:

  • Sativa-dominant: gives you energy and helps you to stay focused.
  • Indica-dominant: helps you to sleep better with a bit of relaxation of the body.
  • Balanced: provide an equal amount of body relaxation and mental focus.

Indica-Dominant Hybrid Strains

Indica-dominant hybrids have some sativa features mixed in with their indica characteristics. Due to their calming properties.

If you want to reduce tension or discomfort without sacrificing your uplifting attributes, then this is for you.

Benefits:

  • Relaxation and stress relief
  • Sleep aid
  • Pain management
  • Anxiety and mood improvement

Some popular indica dominant hybrids are:

  • Blueberry: This indica dominant hybrid is often chosen for its relaxing and mood-enhancing effects with sweet and fruity flavors.
  • Witch doctor: Known for its soothing effects, it’s often used to help with anxiety and stress.
  • God’s gift: A cross between OG Kush and Granddaddy Purple, it's celebrated for its calming effects and pleasant taste.
  • OG Kush: This iconic strain delivers a powerful euphoria along with deep relaxation.

Sativa-dominant Hybrid Strains

Sativa-dominant hybrid strains are cannabis strains that have a higher percentage of sativa genetics in comparison to indica genetics. These strains give you energizing effects and boost your mood. Making them popular for daytime use.

Benefits:

  • Increased focus and creativity
  • Mild body relaxation
  • Energizing effects
  • Mood enhancement

Some popular Sativa-dominant hybrids are:

  • Jack Herer: gives you mental clarity with mild physical comfort.
  • Blue Dream: It provides relaxation without heavy sedation, making it ideal for daytime activities.
  • Lemon cake: Known for its sweet citrus flavor and uplifting effects, it's popular among users seeking a cheerful experience.

What factors to consider when choosing a hybrid strain?

How to choose a hybrid strain

Choosing the right strain can be a pretty daunting experience. There are dozens of brands giving outdated advice claiming that the strain they have is the one you should buy.

When choosing a hybrid strain, consider the following factors:

  • Desired Effects: Do you want pain reduction? Creativity? Relaxation? Different hybrids can offer varying balances of these effects.
  • THC and CBD Levels: Check the cannabinoid profile. Higher THC levels may provide you with stronger mind-altering effects without much relaxation, while CBD can offer physical and mental relaxation and calmness without getting you high.
  • Indica vs. Sativa Dominance: Understand whether you prefer a sativa-dominant hybrid for energy and focus or an indica-dominant hybrid for relaxation and sedation.
  • Personal Tolerance and Experience: Reflect on your previous experiences with cannabis. Beginners may want to start with milder strains to gauge their tolerance.

By considering these factors, you can select a hybrid strain that aligns with your preferences and needs.

How Does THC and CBD Ratio Affect Potency?

THC and CBD ratio directly affects the potency and the experience. They work together in interesting ways to shape the cannabis experience. While THC is responsible for the "high," CBD can influence how that high feels.

What's interesting is how CBD can complement THC's effects. Their interaction, often called the "entourage effect," can result in a more nuanced experience than either compound alone. Many users find that products with both THC and CBD offer a well-rounded effect profile.

Higher CBD content also translates to more mental and physical relaxation and comfort.

When we talk about ratios, we're really discussing the balance of effects. A product with more CBD relative to THC isn't necessarily less intoxicating, but it might offer a different kind of experience - one that some users find more balanced or comfortable.

In our Black Cherry Delta-9 Gummies, we've settled on a 1:4 THC:CBD ratio after extensive testing. This proportion aims to provide a well-rounded experience, combining the benefits of both compounds.

Conclusion

So, there you have it! The world of cannabis is more than just "indica" and "sativa."

Sativa are generally more energizing, and indica more relaxing, but that’s not always the case.

The best way to find what works for you is through exploration. Don't be afraid to experiment (responsibly, of course!).
