What Are Cannabinoids? How Do They Work?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants. These cannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors in our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and alter neurochemical releases in our brain.

The ECS plays a key role in regulating various physiological and cognitive functions and processes to ensure they’re working properly and in harmony with each other. This harmonious functioning is known as homeostasis, or balance, in our body which influences pain sensation, mood, sleep cycles and even memory.

Cannabinoids are of two types – endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids produced by your own body and phytocannabinoids are found in cannabis plants.

When your endocannabinoid system is out of balance – i.e. your body’s not adequately producing its own cannabinoids, phytocannabinoids can offer much needed help to bring you back to harmony.

They can support your endocannabinoids and also offer their own unique benefits.

Phytocannabinoids interact with and activate our CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors.

CB1 receptors are mostly present in the brain and central nervous system (CNS), they’re also present in other vital organs like lungs, liver, kidneys etc. to a smaller extent.

CB2 receptors are predominantly found in the immune system and play an important role in combating inflammation.

Cannabinoids interact with the cannabinoid receptors in your ECS and can have a range of effects on:

  • Pain
  • Mood
  • Memory
  • Sleep Cycles
  • Immunity
  • Inflammation
  • Appetite Stimulation
  • Reproductive Health

…and more.

CBD and THC are two of the best known and most researched cannabinoids, but minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN are also gaining popularity because of their unique benefits.

The Evolution of Cannabinoid Extraction

Alcohol Extraction: The plant material is soaked in ethanol, then filtered, and the alcohol is evaporated. This method can be done at various temperatures and is efficient for large batches.

Traditionally ethanol extraction, also known as alcohol extraction, finds its origins in ancient human settlements. The modern ethanol extraction process was discovered by Michael Faraday in 18251.

When it comes to cannabis, ethanol has been the solvent for botanical extractions throughout history. In as early as 1851, American Pharmacopeia listed some ethanol-based cannabis extracts and the same were being sold until cannabis was outlawed by Marijuana Tax Act, 1937.

The legalization of cannabis in various regions has led to a surge in technological advancements. Modern methods like CO2, hydrocarbon, and have become standard in the industry.

CO2 Extraction uses supercritical carbon dioxide to separate cannabinoids from terpenes and other plant compounds.

This process was developed by the coffee industry in the 1970s for decaffeinating coffee beans. Its superior efficiency and ability to produce pure extracts, remove toxins led to adoption by other industries, like hemp and cannabis.

Hydrocarbon Extraction: Solvents like butane or propane to dissolve and extract cannabinoids. It’s known for producing potent concentrates but requires careful handling due to the flammability of the solvents.

Cellular Deconstruction Technology: Cellular Deconstruction Technology represents a groundbreaking shift in extraction methods. This innovative process extracts undamaged cannabinoids and offers the purest form of the product.

While ethanol extraction has been known to pull in more than we bargained for, like chlorophyll, and it’s no secret that CO2 extraction can be pretty rough on the compounds we care about.

Thermal cycling? Pressure? They’re not exactly gentle.

The older extraction methods have been used for a long time, but they’re like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Sure, you’ll get to the inside, but at what cost?

From the age-old ethanol extractions to the modern CO2 methods, we’ve come a long way, but to call Cellular Deconstruction Technology just another step wouldn’t be doing it justice.

CDT isn’t just a step forward; it’s a quantum leap.

CDT delivers a near-perfect extraction rate without the need for chemical solvents, extreme temperatures or pressures.

What Are Nanoionized Cannabinoids?

Nanoionized cannabinoids are a form of cannabinoids that have been processed into nanoparticles.

This process involves breaking down the cannabinoid molecules into much smaller, more bioavailable particles using Cellular Deconstruction Technology. Here’s a breakdown of what they are and their potential benefits:

  • Perfect Size: One nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. Nanoparticles are typically sized between 1 to 100 nm/less than 100nm.  CDT ionizes cannabinoids by shifting their polar charge which brings them down to a more bioavailable size of roughly 28.8 nanometers.

The Benefits of Nano-ionized Cannabinoids

Nano-ionized cannabinoids are special due to their nanoscale size and the unique effects that come with it. Here’s what makes them stand out:

  • Enhanced Bioavailability: Their small size significantly increases their bioavailability, which is the rate and extent to which active substances are absorbed and become available at the site of action. This means that nano-ionized cannabinoids can be more effective at lower doses compared to traditional forms.
  • Rapid Onset: Due to their increased bioavailability, nano-ionized cannabinoids can have a faster onset of action. This quick onset is partly because, once ingested, the nanoparticles are broken down much faster by the body.
  • Improved Stability and Solubility: Nano-ionization enhances the stability and consistency of cannabinoids in various formulations, which is important for creating consistent and effective cannabis-infused products.
  • Enhanced Penetration: Due to their small size, nano-ionized cannabinoids can penetrate biological membranes, such as the skin or the lining of the gut, more effectively.

Whole Spectrum Cannabinoids

The term “Whole Spectrum” represents the latest evolution in extraction technology, going beyond just cannabinoids. Our Whole Spectrum products are derived from Cellular Deconstruction Technology, capturing 99%+ of the plant’s offerings, including CBD, THC, and a full array of other valuable molecules that contribute to the entourage effect.

This isn’t just about cannabinoids; it’s about harnessing the plant’s full potential.

Essentially, it’s a truly “whole-plant” extract.

Whole Spectrum includes not only cannabinoids like CBD and THC but also vital omegas and other beneficial molecules, all enhancing the entourage effect.

The entourage effect suggests that the combined action of all compounds found in the cannabis plant, including various cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural compounds, can enhance the overall therapeutic effects.

While we know the entourage effect is real, the precise proportions of minor cannabinoids needed to enhance primary cannabinoids remain uncertain due to ongoing research. Following nature’s ratios during extraction is likely the most effective path.

The benefits of whole spectrum products compared to isolated ones include:

  • Synergistic Effects: The various components in whole spectrum extracts may work together to boost each other’s positive effects.
  • Broader Therapeutic Potential: The full array of compounds may interact with the body in a more holistic way, potentially offering a wider range of therapeutic benefits.
  • Less Processing: Whole spectrum extracts undergo less processing than isolates, which some believe could result in a more natural product.

It’s important to note that individual experiences with cannabinoids can vary, and what works best can depend on personal needs and preferences.

Our products are extracted with Cellular Deconstruction Technology to deliver a cannabis extract that’s true to the plant’s original composition.

It’s a full-plant extract, encompassing all cannabinoids, terpenes, and even omega vitamins 3, 6, 9, plus some unidentified yet-to-be-discovered cannabinoids.

The Importance of the Entourage Effect

CBD, THC and the entourage effect

The entourage effect is a scientific theory which suggests that whole cannabis plant extracts are more effective than isolated cannabinoids. That’s because all the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other plant compounds work together to enhance each other’s effects.

The entourage effect proposes that the synergy between hundreds of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other components in cannabis enhances their overall effects when consumed together.

Researchers have found that pure THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) alone is not as well-tolerated by medical cannabis patients as botanical extracts.

The presence of other molecules in cannabis can modulate THC’s effects, resulting in better experiences.

For example, CBD (cannabidiol) interacts with the same receptor as THC but in a different way. CBD mitigates THC’s side effects like paranoia and memory disruption while enhancing bodily euphoria and relaxation.

THC : CBD ratio: The balance of THC and CBD influences the level of psychoactivity experienced by cannabis consumers. Higher CBD levels can reduce the unwanted effects of THC while amplifying its relaxing euphoria.

What is CDT?

Cellular Deconstruction Technology

Cellular Deconstruction Technology (CDT) is a cutting-edge extraction method that has revolutionized the way cannabinoids are extracted from cannabis plants.

CDT is a proprietary extraction technology developed by American Extractions. Unlike traditional methods, which often leave behind up to 50% of valuable plant compounds, CDT captures the whole plant, maintaining its true integrity in every product.

It uses physics instead of chemicals to extract cannabinoids, energy to open plant cell walls and extract all valuable molecules whole, complete, and undamaged.

Once the hemp is dried and ready for extraction, 16 million joules of energy are injected into the hemp.

This is a significant amount of energy that is carefully controlled and applied to the plant material.

Here’s an introduction to CDT and its role in cannabinoid extraction:

  • 99%+ Extraction Rate: CDT boasts an impressive extraction rate, capturing over 99% of valuable plant compounds, which is significantly higher than traditional extraction methods.
  • Chemical-Free Process: Unlike some conventional methods that rely on solvents or CO2, CDT uses physics rather than chemistry, making it a solvent-free and CO2-free process.
  • Preserves Plant Integrity: This technology ensures that all cannabinoids and other valuable molecules are collected and delivered in the exact ratios in which they existed in the plant, maintaining the plant’s true integrity throughout the extraction process.

How is CDT Different From Other Extraction Methods?

  • Solvent-Free: A cleaner method that doesn’t use harsh chemicals that leave residual “fingerprints” overtime. It is solventless extraction which leaves no harmful residues.
  • Temperature Control: The extraction never exceeds 90 degrees and operates under mild conditions to protect delicate molecules.
  • High Efficiency: Over 99% of plant material is extracted, with minimal loss.
  • Consistent Quality: The process ensures a consistent effects every time
  • Natural Ratios: Retaining the cannabinoid ratios as they are found in nature, potentially leading to more effective outcomes.
  • Advanced-Nano Ionization: Transforms cannabinoids into true nano particles that are more effective and longer-lasting in the body.
